The History of Foxxy's
In 1932, Frank and Billie Spafford built the Evergreen Chateau just west of Spooner, Wisconsin. Billie said that because of the Great Depression they could not afford a car, so she had to walk into town to buy liquor and groceries to serve to customers. Jack Peltier, who owned the Hotel Spooner by the depot, bought the night club form the Spaffords in 1944. In the 1945 phone book, the business was listed simply as Jack Peltier's Nite Club.
Tom and Helen Murray were the owners in the 1950s, advertising, "You're Always Welcome at Murray's Knotty Pine Cocktail Bar. Steaks, chicken, seafood served every night." At that time, the club was still basically two rooms - one with a bar and one with tables for dinners which was reached by going down several steps. Often the tavern was just called "The Dugout." The road running by there was then County Highway A.
In the early 1960s, Spooner railroader Harold "Ike" Busch and his wife, Janet, bought the business and called it the Shamrock Supper Club. Just prior to that time, the Busch's had owned Northwoods Bar in downtown Spooner.
A few years later the Shamrock had new owners, Bill Brooks and Larry Brown, and a new name was given to the business, The Red Fox Grill. The next owners were the Blocks, a German couple from Milwaukee, who owned the place just briefly before selling it to Gary Scalzo form Spooner. He ran the club for a while before it was remodeled in 1974 and sold to Richard and Thomas Glau, father and son, who came from Madison. The elder Glau was originally from the area.
The Glaus ran the old Red Fox for just a few years - until fire destroyed it in the late 1970s. They built a new above-ground structure and ran the Red Fox Supper Club until selling to Mark Andrea and Steve and Ann Robertson in 1988. They changed the name of the business to Foxxy's Bar and Grill. The Robertsons were only involved in the business for a while. Then for a time Andrea was joined by his sister, Lynn Hanford, in running Foxxy's. Today Mark is the sole owner.
Mark Andrea's restaurant experience includes running Mark's Club 70 and Mark's Pizza at Spooner, as well as restaurants in Cumberland and Rice Lake. With a considerably larger facility than the Evergreen Chateau, Marray's Knotty Pine Cocktail Bar or the Shamrock Supper Club ever had, Foxxy's has a much more extensive menu than its predecessors had during the "dugout" days as well.
In keeping with a fine tradition, Foxxy’s continues today to provide the finest foods and hospitality to all residents and travelers in Northwestern Wisconsin.
