A Thousand Lakes of FUN: Washburn County, Wisconsin
Nearly 1,000 sparkling lakes, good old-fashioned resorts and Friday Night Fish Fries, Washburn County is the ideal destination to plan your summer getaway. Washburn County is located in Northwest Wisconsin, directly between Eau Claire and Duluth/Superior. You could say that Washburn County is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, but that might be an understatement. With nearly 1,000 lakes, it's one of the premier destinations for outdoor recreation in the state of Wisconsin. Home to both the Bluegill and Walleye Capitals of Wisconsin (Birchwood and Long Lake), fishing is a great family sport to get out and enjoy the water. Here's our "short list" of some of the ways we love to experience Washburn County!
Exploring the Namekagon River
Wisconsin's Moving National Park, the Namekagon River, is one of the top rivers for outdoor recreation in the midwest. Part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, this river offers incredible opportunities for paddling, tubing, fishing and wildlife viewing.
Walleye Capital of Wisconsin
Long Lake, the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin, is a 19 mile long lake which not only offers superb fishing, but lake recreation as well. Pontoon rentals, along with kayaks, canoes, boats, and even stand up paddle boards make getting out and enjoying the lake a piece of cake.
Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin
Birchwood, known as the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin, is home to some of the best Bluegill fishing around. This area offers a huge amount of small, glacial lakes which are incredible fisheries for panfish. Of special interest are the Birchwood Canoe Routes, referred to as the "mini boundary waters."
With nearly 1,000 lakes in the county, fishing is a popular pastime around here! From small "pot-hole" lakes to 3,300 acre lakes, the area has a whole lot of options to choose from. If you're not sure where to start, be sure to schedule an area fishing guide to assist in getting you out there.
Hit the Beach
You thought beaches only existed on the ocean? You'll think twice after visiting the beautiful Shell Lake beach. Part of Shell Lake's beautiful Memorial Park, Shell Lake beach offers a sandy shoreline with a gradual slope; perfect for families! Plenty of amenities are nearby as well.
Whether you want to wake up to the sound of a loon from your dream cabin or drop a line after a peaceful night's rest at a lake-side campsite, Washburn County has the lodging option perfect for you. You'll even find remote campsites if you wan to get away from it all and really "rough it."
