You can fish for muskies, northerns, bass, walleye, bluegill, crappies, panfish and trout on over 30,000 acres of water. The Birchwood area boasts the title of Wisconsin's bluegill capital, and 3,200-acre Long Lake is dubbed the walleye capital. You'll also want to visit the largest musky hatchery in the world, in Spooner. Birchwood, Minong, Shell Lake, and Springbrook all offer public swimming beaches, and you can enjoy excellent sandy beaches at shores of some of the private resorts and campgrounds. Not only does the area offer amazing rivers to explore, but the lakes are ideal for canoeing and kayaking. Sawmill portage routes are one of the area's hidden gems, known as the mini-boundary waters, these portage routes at Sawmill Campground are a must explore for the adventurer.
Beaches of Washburn County
There's nothing better than building a sand castle and taking a jump in the water when the summer sun starts beating down. If you're looking for a beach in the area, Shell Lake Beach will not disappoint. It's by far one of the best beaches in Northwest Wisconsin. Other great beaches are located at Doolittle Park and Totogatic Park.
