Winter in Washburn County is truly a magical time with sparkling snow, freshly groomed trails, and cozy fireplaces to catch up with loved ones. We want you, our neighbors and friends, to experience all that our great area has to offer safely. Here are some tips to stay safe this winter.

On the Road:

  • Check your tires, ensuring they have enough traction for winter roads.
  • Pack an emergency blanket and warm winter clothing in case you end up stranded.
  • Carry a first aid kit with you at all times.
  • Let someone know where you are going, the route you’re taking, and when you should be expected back.
  • Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle with items like a flashlight, snacks, water, ice scraper, phone charger, cat litter or sand for traction, flares or reflective triangles, and extra clothing or blankets.

On the Ice:

  • Always check the ice thickness. Ice conditions may vary every few feet, so be sure to check often.
  • When possible, avoid driving on the ice.
  • Remember that no ice is completely safe.
  • Dress warm and pack extra clothing or blankets.
  • Wear boots with extra traction or consider adding ice cleats to your boots to avoid slipping on the ice.
  • Pack a safety kit that includes rope, ice pick, and a life jacket.

On the Trails:

  • Dress in warm layers so that you can adjust and add or remove layers to stay warm.
  • Stay on the trail. Whether you’re snowmobiling, skiing, or snowshoeing, don’t stray from the trail as there may be hidden dangers under the snow that you can’t see.
  • Always venture out with a friend. If you can’t, be sure someone knows where you’re going and when to expect you back.
  • Pack a safety kit with items such as a flashlight, snacks, first aid kit, water, etc.
