Attractions

Washburn County is home to a variety of incredible attractions. Spend an afternoon with the kids on the Spooner Train Ride's Family Pizza Train or head out for an evening train ride with your loved one for the Elegant Dinner Train. The Spooner Train Ride follows along the picturesque Namekagon River, managed by the National Park Service.

The area also offers a variety of museums to choose from. The Railroad Memories Museum is located in Spooner, right next door to the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum. In nearby Shell Lake, you'll find the Museum of Woodcarving, housing over 100 life-sized carvings all created by one man, the Washburn County Historical Museum complex which offers several buildings to learn about the area's rich history. You will also find historical museums in Springbrook, Stone Lake, and Birchwood. Stone Lake's historical museum is housed in the old depot and even has a caboose that you can climb inside. Birchwood offers two museums, the Birchwood Area Log Museum and the Howard Morey Homestead.

For the more adventurous, Washburn County offers attractions such as Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, a 500 acre nature reserve, Bulik's Amusement Park to sharpen up your mini golf skills or race around the go-kart track, or the Beaverbrook Wildlife Area where you'll find an artesian well. In addition, tours are offered at the Spooner Fish Hatchery if you want to learn more about how Wisconsin's lakes are stocked. If you're looking for some hands on fun for the kids, head to Wilderness Walk Zoo & Western Town just outside of Hayward.

Some of the other fun you'll find here includes the Potter's Shed, located in Shell Lake, which offers a unique gallery, garden and a create-your-own area where you can build your own mosaic or paint your own pottery. Just outside of Shell Lake, you'll find Clover Meadow Winery, the midwest's only certified organic winery. Shell Lake also offers two performing arts attractions; the Shell Lake Arts Center brings talent from all over the U.S. to perform during the summer at the Darrell Aderman Auditorium and the Lakefront Pavilion at the Shell Lake Beach. Theatrein the Woods offers a variety of plays, musicals, and concerts throughout the year at the Erika Quam Memorial Theatre.

There's always something fun to do in Washburn County. Have fun exploring!
